Just for fun, here are my rapid fire rambling thoughts on the ATLA ships and platonic dynamics hehe (please don’t go full ship wars tho - these are just my opinions as a chill multishipper!)

My Favorite Ships:

• Zukka - My current brainrot and main ship!! I know they aren’t canon but I really love them and their potential okay😭I just feel like their personalities would work so well! Sokka would call Zuko on his shit and Zuko would be good at grounding Sokka when he needs it. Plus I have seen some absolutely breathtaking AUs with this ship! And fire-and-ice vibes except gay! Them <3

• Kataang - Cutiessss!! I love them! They may not be the ship I think about most often, but when I do think about them, they’re adorable! Aang is such a “my wife” guy and Katara absolutely adores him back! Also the last airbender x last southern waterbender dynamic goes HARD! I like that these two are canon!

• Yuetara - Listen I know they barely interacted but THEY’VE ACTUALLY GROWN ON ME SO MUCH LATELY AND I VERY HIGH KEY SHIP THEM! Something about like, Katara thinking about Yue when she bends is so😭Their story would be heartbreaking in the best way!! Sapphic noncanon blorbos <3

• Mailee - These two are SO cute and have so much potential rahhh!! Again, love some noncanon sapphics <3

• Batkoda - Super SUPER cute and silly and fun! The dads fr <3 Bato is either Katara and Sokka’s adopted uncle or their stepdad and I love it for them hehe! This usually pairs well with a “Hakoda adopts Zuko” AU lmao!

Other Canon/Relatively Popular Ships:

• Zutara - A good ship! I see the potential and tbh it’s very very fun to think about sometimes!!! However, some of y’all toxic Zutara stans need to leave my boy Aang alone lmao. Those who are chill tho, I rock with y’all!! Overall, I’m not opposed if it’s done well and I do sometimes seek out Zutara content! I personally do prefer writing them as found siblings tho, especially with the Azula and Katara parallels!!

• Sukka - Canon cuties!! I really like them! Suki my BELOVED <3 She’s so underrated!

• Yukka - Also canon cuties! They make me sad tho ahhhhh😭😭😭

• Maiko - Also ALSO canon cuties!! They have an interesting dynamic that I can really appreciate! And gotta love Mai <3

• Jinko - Jin my beloved! These two had a super cute dynamic during the one episode they had together lmaoooo, tho I don’t think about this ship too too often.

• Tokka - I don’t mind it if it’s them getting together as adults! But tbh I personally don’t prefer shipping them as teens and I think Toph’s crush was just a typical young girl crush on someone slightly older lol. Definitely not horrible and most Tokka shippers are relatively chill! I like to think Sokka sees Toph as a little sister tho.

Now For Some Of The Crackship-y/Less Popular Ships (based on ships I’ve actually seen):

• Zukki (Zuko/Sokka/Suki) - Power throuple fr and I love some polyamory!! While I mostly lean plain Zukka, this is extremely fun to think about and would be a great dynamic!

• Mai/Ty Lee/Suki - Saw this in a Zukka fic once and it was adorableeeeee! I may not have plans to actively write this or anything, but it’s cute! Another power throuple!

• Jetko - I don’t think they would be compatible long term, but by god they are very very fun to think about in a “Jet flirts with Zuko and Zuko is completely oblivious and they share one kiss before everything goes to shit” way lmao!

• Taang - I can respect it!! I will always love them as chaos siblings personally, but it’s a totally valid and chill ship!

• Katoph - Not a bad ship at all! I’ve only come across like one post tho lmao. Also I do think I heavily prefer them as found sisters, but that’s just me personally! Again, totally a valid and chill ship!

• Azutara - I’m very neutral on this lmao. I don’t despise it at all and it could be pretty interesting?? But tbh really not something I plan to seek out.

• Azulaang - I mean?? I’m also pretty neutral on this one. Aang would be kind to her if she was trying to get help but…idk lmao.

• Tyzula - I see the potential, but I personally think Mai and Ty Lee had a healthier and more interesting and more realistic dynamic. Just my preference tho!

(I think I just want Azula to be in therapy before I reallyyyyy ship her lmao, but NOT THE KIND OF “THERAPY” SHE WAS GIVEN IN THE COMICS)

• Zukaang - I don’t love this as a ship honestly. The canon age gap as teens is sketchy for my personal taste, tho I’ve seen people ship them in “Aang was 16 when he got frozen” AUs and that’s…better and I can get behind it a little! It would be interesting! But I think Roku being Zuko’s great-grandpa just still throws me off of this ship. I don’t have any beef with the shippers tho! I’m very “live and let live” and I have seen so much worse lol.

Can’t Forget My Fav Platonic Dynamics!

• Sokka and Aang - Two found brothers who share one idiot braincell when they interact LMAO! Love them always <3

• Sokka and Katara - The siblings ever!!

• Zuko and Aang - Enemies to found brothers!! Canon besties! I love their friendship and their parallels SO MUCH!!

• Toph and Katara - Absolutely ADORABLE as found sisters!!!! Love them!

• Zuko and Katara - I really like their development in a platonic sense and I think they’re very very fun and lovely found siblings by the end!!!! Zuko is 100% the brother that just “yeah my sister can and will whoop your ass” LMAO!

• Zuko and Toph - Also very found siblings in my head!! Only have a handful of solo interactions in canon but I DON’T CARE! I WILL FOUND FAMILY THEM ANYWAY! I’m a “Toph seeks out Zuko for sibling hugs/cuddles when she’s cold because he’s basically a space heater” truther.

• Uncle Iroh and the Gaang - Zuko needs to learn to share because that is ALL OF THEIR Uncle!!!

• Hakoda and Zuko - I thrive in this section of the fandom!! They have exactly one (1) frame together in canon, but I ADORE Dadkoda adopting Zuko! Something about it is just so wholesome and cute!!! My very very fav ATLA fics are this trope!!#LetHakodaBitchSlapOzaiAndAdoptZuko2024

• Uncle Iroh and Zuko - God they make me so ALSNDKSNXNCNSNSNXNX, y’know?

• The Gaang as a whole - Obvious I know, but I really do love them😭They all bonded sm and I adore their little family!! I eat up fanart of the Gaang cuddling like CANDY omg. And yes Suki is included in the Gaang because WHY WOULDN’T SHE BE!

(friendships) fuck uh aang & yue, ice

hello :) ooooooo okay okay okay

pushing the yue with pots (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) agenda because i can so yue has pots in thus :)

modern au: one day after school, yue misses the bus (she’s a junior and only has her permit because her parents are nervous to let her drive because they are overprotective) because she was talking to a teacher about a test she needs to make up

so she thinks home isn’t too far away, i can walk home--it’s like a ten minute walk which is a terrible idea but yue doesn’t want to call her mom and ask her to pick her up or bother any of her friends (even tho they’d all help her in an instance)

what she forgot about, tho, is that it’s winter and there’s this semi-steep hill she has to walk up to get home (if she doesn’t go that way, it adds another fifteen minutes) and she takes a deep breath and starts walking

but she gets fatigued really quickly and suddenly there’s a patch of ice and she slips and falls. luckily, she doesn’t fall down the hill, but she falls and she’s so tired and out of breath and she’s dizzy and feels close to passing out even tho she knows she probably won’t and also it’s cold and she’s holding herself up which means her hand in on the ice but she can’t get herself up--

and then she hears a familiar voice call her name and it’s aang and he’s running up the hill, jumping over / avoiding any patches of ice he sees and he doesn’t ask questions or berate her for walking up the hill, he just slowly helps her up.

when she’s up, he offers his arm and she holds onto him the rest of the way up and to her house and he doesn’t mention it--he just chats with her. i mean, he asks if she’s okay (obviously), but he never brings it up because he doesn’t want to embarrass her or make her feel bad

and this is like the first real conversation yue ever had with aang since she only ever really speaks to him when he’s with katara or sokka or suki and she can’t help but think he is the purest kid ever??? and even when they reach her house, she invites him in for hot chocolate and he ends up staying for dinner and afterwards because aang manages to charm her parents and because yue wants him to stay

and then they become great friends and it all happened because yue slipped on ice

Give me a fandom and I’ll give you my:

* OT3 (triangle, all involved with one another): so I have. More than one of these. Like a lot. My main three are Zujintara, Jetkotara, and Maizulee. There's also Teophaang and Suekka (or whatever Suki/Sokka/Yue is called). Official one for this is Maizulee.

* OTV (three ppl, but one person is involved with the other two): Maikotara. Katara has a gf and a bf who are still learning to get along after their breakup years ago. I also like this one ok as a triangle.

* OT4 (quad, all involved with one another): Zujintaret my beloved. All the fluff of Zujintara, all the history of Jetkotara, what's not to love?

*OTN (four ppl, but not all involved with one another): hmm. I don't particularly have one of these, but right after I started shipping Teoaang and Tophzula it occurred to me that those could happen at the same time as Taang. So yeah. I don't have a name for it, though.

*OTMoar (five or more in a polyfidelitious ship together): Katara x Jin x Zuko x Jet x Ty Lee. This started out as "give Katara all the SOs she could possibly desire" but quickly morphed into "they're all dating at least most of the others". It works.

*OTPPP (poly puppy pile of a group in any manner of configuration of my choice): *screaming* too many options. Suffice to say, it is complicated and I can't decide which of the many possible configurations to put here.

*OTPOTP (two OTPs that I think should link up together for occasional sexy times): N/A. I do not wish to think about the sexy times.

*OTO (OTP in an open relationship): Taang all the way. I actually headcanon that this is how Teophaang would get started-- Toph and Aang are in an open relationship, Aang starts dating Teo, Toph and Teo become besties and start dating.

*OTPLP (one true platonic life partners): I mean, I don't care whether any of these ships are romantic or not most of the time, I just want the emotional intimacy and the Feelings™.

and just for funzies, I’ll throw in the traditional…

*OTP: I have so many. So here I will put a pairing I quite like but haven't really talked about cause I mostly ship them with each other (and Yue in a Yue Lives AU): Sukka.

Yue/Suki: The ship you never knew you needed.

So since I’ve been rewatching Avatar, along with half the internet, I galaxy-brained recently about the ships. Zukka is obviously wonderful, but Suki often ends up ignored :( my girl deserves better. (and there are reasons for this, the fact that she’s not as much of a main character as the rest of the Gaang and that we don’t get her backstory, but still) there’s the more niche ship of Zuko/Sokka/Suki, but that’s much rarer (I say, about to talk about a pairing I’ve never seen before). Sooo... Yue/Suki.

Why I think they’d work together (Also see This Post by @visit-ba-sing-se, though this is about a platonic relationship, it still hits why they’d get along, and anyway I also like them as friends):

They’re both leaders, Yue is a princess and Suki is leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, but in different and complementary ways.

I get the feeling that the Kyoshi warriors work off of a “first among equals” system, so Suki would be skilled at managing and working with a team, and as a warrior would know when it’s time to knock some sense into people.

Yue as princess of a nation would be better at diplomacy, and working alone, either big picture or with individuals, and would know when to compromise or back down or take a short break from negotiations.

They both care deeply for their people, and protecting them is one of their primary goals.

Similarly, they both are willing to make sacrifices for the greater good. Yue’s is obvious (engaged to Hahn for the good of her people, sacrificing herself to save the moon) but Suki also let herself and her warriors get captured by Azula to let Appa (the Avatar’s bison, so a symbol of hope, and important to Aang) escape.

I’d say they’re both good at planning on the fly as well, though in different areas, so their skills would complement each other.

Thanks to the above, they would understand each other and work well together, even if they weren’t a couple.

Headcanons:

Suki would help Yue fight the patriarchy (literally, Yue isn’t getting out of this relationship without learning some self-defense at the least) which is the ultimate bonding activity.

They’re training together, and Yue’s still a beginner, so Suki is patiently correcting her form, and it’s cold out but her hands are warm and strong and steady as she teaches her how to properly knock someone out... Peak Romance.

Yue has a sense of humor, and helps Suki dominate in prank wars. I will not be accepting criticism.

Suki helps her relax and be herself.

Suki could absolutely bridal-carry Yue. Yes this deserves it’s own bullet point. Everyone wants a buff girlfriend, and if you don’t, you are the buff girlfriend (or a coward) /j

The two of them staying up late talking for hours about literally everything.

Like even if you don’t ship it these two would be best friends.

They would be absurdly wholesome (cheek kisses, you will never get them to stop holding hands, constant besotted smiles), but also spend 45% of their time painting each other’s nails and scheming.

Some funny coincidences:

Suki: “use your opponent’s strength against them” the Wiki on waterbenders: “they let their defense become their offense, turning their opponents' own forces against them” hmm.

Suki and Yue both mean moon. (In Japanese and Mandarin respectively)

Edit: It’s actually Tsuki that means moon. Suki means beloved.

Yuki means snow or happiness in Japanese, which is just adorable.

I’m putting the rest of my thoughts under the cut, because I have many.

I honestly think that if Yue had lived, she and Sokka probably wouldn’t have stayed together for very long, if only because they have different paths. But they’d still be friends and stay in contact, at least once the war ended and everything got more stable. Also, she is not staying engaged to Hahn. (the specific situation I’m imagining for her survival is pretty much from Little Zuko by @muffinlance, minus the little Zuko, so she gets even more connected to the moon and refuses to take anymore of the patriarchy’s bull.)

Regarding Suki, it could go a whole bunch of ways. Maybe she and Sokka never actually got together, or they broke up at some point post-boiling rock/ post-war because they figured they’d be better as friends (Make no mistake, Suki and Sokka would be great friends if they weren’t dating.) and Sokka and Zuko get together. Personally I favor the second, specifically because Yue and Suki would absolutely friendly-tease Sokka about it. (I’d say we have the same type, but you’re dating Zuko... I stopped dating my ex-boyfriend and started dating my ex-boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend: it’s going ex-cellent... You’re not the only one who can date *other girlfriend’s name*... Zuko also joins in the teasing.) It’s like the Korrasami and Mako situation in LoK except better, because the relationships aren’t forced and they’re definitely friends. (tho I haven’t actually watched LoK, I’ve just been spoiled, so I could be getting that wrong)

But anyway it’s some point after the war, and Sokka and Zuko are dating and they “both” “have” to go to the North Pole for diplomatic reasons (Sokka just wants an excuse to be with his boyfriend and to catch up with Yue) and since in comics canon the Kyoshi Warriors act as Zuko’s bodyguards Suki is coming along too. Sokka’s excited to introduce two of his friends to each other so although Yue is a princess, she’s introduced to Suki as a person first, and royalty second. (besides, Suki knows how big of a dork Zuko- the Actual Firelord is, so she already has an open mind about not putting royalty up on a pedestal)

Over the course of the visit they’re hanging out a lot, since Suki is still technically Zuko’s bodyguard, and of course Zuko and Sokka are spending a bunch of time together, and Sokka’s spending lots of time catching up with Yue, so there’s a lot of time where all four of them are just chilling in each other’s vicinity, and eventually the girls start hanging out together, just the two of them.

And maybe Suki is demonstrating her combat skills and hmm. She looks very nice. Very graceful and strong and gorgeous and she’s explaining the techniques and Yue can tell that she’s skilled, not just in fighting, but in strategy... and maybe Yue’s going on this tirade about how the North Pole could be improved and how the near century of isolationism made it rigid where water is meant to change and Suki’s hanging on to her every word because Yue doesn’t rant because it’s not proper, but she’s comfortable enough to be angry about this with her and she’s so smart and clearly understands what she’s talking about and she looks really pretty when she’s in a righteous rage... and whoops they fall in love. They could pine a whole bunch, but I think that once they both realized one of them would probably confess her feelings and “it’s ok if you don’t feel the same way-” but of course the other one does and they kiss. I would totally write this if I could write romance to save my life, but alas. Honestly I might try to anyways, because I’ve been thinking about this for like a week.

My unpopular opinion about this character she's taller than yue. tall suki rights!! also idk how unpopular this is but she has freckles!! both on her face and some on her shoulders & arms

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. i think it would've been so cool if aang had to go into the avatar state & summon kyoshi for some reason (à la avatar day) while suki was there to see it and we got to see her fangirling over avatar kyoshi
